William Preston Kunkle, 81, of Newberry, died Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Springfield Place.

Born on March 30, 1932, in Newberry, he was a son of the late Mattie Kunkle Kneece. He was the former owner of Kunkle Oil Company, Inc. and Kunkle Tire and Service Center in Newberry. Mr. Kunkle served in the S.C. National Guard and was a member of Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church. He loved his church, and served as a former member of church council, as well as various committees. He was a faithful and longtime supporter of Boy Scout Troop 222 and Boy Scout Troop 69.

He was a very generous person. He never hesitated to help others, and he touched many lives with his friendship and generosity. He enjoyed gardening, cooking, fishing, hunting and NASCAR.

He loved his family, and his greatest joy was spending time with them.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Morris Kunkle; sons and daughters-in-law, Billy and Kathy Kunkle of Newberry and Kevin and Nancy Kunkle of Chapin; daughters and sons-in-law, Karol Kunkle and Rance Boozer of Newberry and Kathy and Billy Yongue of Little Mountain; brothers and sisters-in-law, James Kneece, Jerry and Janice Kneece and Wayne and Eve Kneece all of Newberry; grandchildren, Allison Boozer, Mark Boozer, Whitney Yongue, Kristyn Yongue, Wil Kunkle, Alex Kunkle, Kori Kunkle and Preston Kunkle.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Monday, March 24, 2014, at Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church by the Rev. Dr. Mary Havens. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church on Monday from 1:30 -2:45 pm. Memorials may be made to Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church General Fund, 1307 Drayton Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Hospice Care of SC for the kind and professional care given to our entire family by their dedicated staff.

Active pallbearers will be Hal Hendrix, Trey Riddle, Jay Harley, Bobby Forbis, Mike Brehmer, Mark Boozer and Wil Kunkle.
